Genetic consequences of the couplet cytoplasmic pollen sterility and pollen migration.

چکیده

ATSON and CASPARI (1960) developed a mathematical model to study the VU behavior of cytoplasmic pollen sterility in populations. They dealt with a population possessing two kinds of cytoplasm and pollen sterility resulting from an interaction of the recessive homozygote with one of the cytoplasms. Under these conditions the frequencies of the maternally transmitted cytoplasms remained unchanged; however, the plasmon-sensitive allele was eliminated. GRUN and AUBERTIN (1965) studying different South American potato species found cytoplasm-gene-conditioned pollen sterility and proposed that it could keep populations genetically isolated if pollen migration of sterility-conditioning genes occurred. CASPARI, WATSON and SMITH (1966) then extended their initial analysis by employing a computer simulation in which seed migration was studied. Their models yielded no evidence that pollen sterility could restrict gene flow between populations. It is the objective of this communication to analytically extend the WATSONCASPARI model to include pollen migration and to evaluate the joint effects of cytoplasmic pollen sterility coupled with pollen migration.

The effect of pollen versus seed flow on the maintenance of nuclear-cytoplasmic gynodioecy.

Gynodioecy, where females co-occur with hermaphrodites, is a relatively common sexual system in plants that is often the result of a genetic conflict between maternally inherited male sterility genes in the mitochondrial genome and the biparentally inherited male fertility restorer genes in the nucleus. Previous models have shown that nuclear-cytoplasmic gynodioecy can be maintained under certa...

The Influence of Cytoplasmic Pollen Sterility on Gene Exchange between Populations.

YTOPLASMICALLY conditioned pollen sterility occurs rather frequently in plants. Usually, the character “pollen sterility” is produced when a particular cytoplasm is combined with a recessive gene in homozygous condition in the same plant. The best investigated example is the pollen sterility in corn (reviewed by DUVICK 1965), but similar conditions have been described in a large number of plant...

Genomic Conflicts that Cause Pollen Mortality and Raise Reproductive Barriers in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Species differentiation and the underlying genetics of reproductive isolation are central topics in evolutionary biology. Hybrid sterility is one kind of reproductive barrier that can lead to differentiation between species. Here, we analyze the complex genetic basis of the intraspecific hybrid male sterility that occurs in the offspring of two distant natural strains of Arabidopsis thaliana, S...

Cytoplasmic Genetic Male Sterility in Plants – a Molecular Perspective

Male sterility is defined as the failure of plants to produce functional anthers, pollen, or male gametes. First documentation of male sterility came in 1763 when Kölreuter observed anther abortion within species and specific hybrids. It is more prevalent than female sterility, probably because, male sporophyte and gametophyte less protected from environment than ovule and embryo sac. Male ster...
